ACCIÓN Yucatán
Sustainable Communities for Climate Action in
the Yucatán Peninsula (ACCIÓN Yucatán)
The “Sustainable Communities for Climate Action in the Yucatán Peninsula (ACCIÓN Yucatán)” project was developed under the coordination of the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature (FMCN), one of Mexico’s leading organizations in promoting ecosystem conservation and sustainable development. Founded in 1994, FMCN has worked in collaboration with communities, governments, enterprises, and international organizations to protect the country’s natural wealth by implementing projects that strengthen local capacities, promote sustainable economic models, and safeguard Mexico’s biodiversity.
The report prepared by Ambiente Acuavita A.C. for ACCIÓN Yucatán focused on the systematization of information and legal, tax, and administrative analysis required to establish a financial mechanism to facilitate the project’s commercialization of forest and blue carbon credits in the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM). This included a focus on the forest and marine ecosystems of the Yucatán Peninsula, which are critical areas for carbon sequestration and climate resilience.
International,
national, and regional context of the VCM was analyzed, including legal
frameworks and successful experiences in forest and blue carbon projects. This
analysis provided the basis for developing technical and financial
recommendations to support the implementation of viable and sustainable
projects in Mexico, taking into account the country’s legal and tax frameworks.
It also sought to strengthen local and regional capacities by providing
communities, authorities, and key stakeholders with relevant tools and
knowledge.
The
“ACCIÓN” Yucatán project represents a significant step forward in the
implementation of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to address climate
change. The Yucatán Peninsula, with its extensive forest and marine ecosystems,
is one of Mexico’s most biodiverse regions, but also one of the areas most
vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
The final report prepared by Ambiente Acuavita A.C. highlights the feasibility of implementing
a forest and blue carbon financial mechanism within the VCM in the Yucatán
Peninsula. This mechanism has the potential not only to generate income for
local communities, but also to contribute to Mexico’s climate change mitigation
commitments, in alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The coordination provided by FMCN was
instrumental, as its ability to bring together communities, government
institutions, and international stakeholders enabled a comprehensive and
sustainable approach. In addition, the project establishes a replicable model
for other regions of Mexico and Latin America, where carbon credits can serve
as a tool to finance conservation and local development.
The project also highlights the
importance of strengthening the legal and administrative framework to
facilitate the participation of local stakeholders and attract investment to
the VCM. Lastly, the project concluded that “ACCIÓN” Yucatán reinforces the
role of the Yucatán Peninsula as a global example of how Nature-based Solutions
can be integrated into climate and sustainable development strategies.
The
project’s success lays the groundwork for continued exploration of innovations
in the VCM, expanding community participation and strengthening the
conservation of ecosystems that are essential to addressing today’s climate
challenges.
